This week we attended VOICE UKs launch, @Derby Quad, for the ’bully for you’ disability hate crime short film. The film was very powerful and really illustrated the seriousness of disability hate crime. It seems the crimes are likely to be treated as anti-social behaviour and so the police have had very little help to offer.
What is disability hate crime? A disability hate crime is a criminal offence motivated by hatred or prejudice towards a person because of their actual or perceived disability. It is also a criminal offence in which immediately before, after or during the offence the perpetrator demonstrates hostility towards a person because of their actual or perceived disability. (See s.146 Criminal Justice Act 2003) www.voiceuk.org.uk
The stories are shocking – they are brutal and vicious!! Read some stories at: http://www.disabilitynow.org.uk/the-hate-crime-dossier
A friend of ours, who has learning difficulties, once said ‘why do they do what they do? If they are angry why don’t they listen to music and unwind?’ He asks a very good question, why do people commit hate crime?!!
The good news – from this event, its seems Derbyshire police are taking an active role in tackling disability hate crime.
We want to help raise the awareness of disability hate crime. We believe if everyone does a small thing to help raise awareness then the bigger picture can be created. To help continue to raise awareness of disability hate crime here is a poem written by Tracey Cullen (co-founder of Inspirative Arts)
