“Dance Movement Therapy is the use of expressive movement and dance as a vehicle through which an individual can engage in the process of personal integration and growth”

(Payne 1992)

Using dance and movement helps each client’s inner world become tangible which allows them to explore it physically and share their personal symbolism to others.

Dancing and moving together creates a visual relationship which can be a very empowering experience. At Inspirative Arts we create a safe environment so that clients are safe to experience these expressions and symbolisms.

"‘Actions speak louder than words"

If a relationship is created visually then this can also create a form of communication – helping the clients to feel connected, involved and valued.

Individual expression

Movement can be used to help individuals express and identify feelings. For example we use this method for simple warm up exercises that will help the clients express how they feel prior to the workshop.

During the closure of the workshops we may ask the clients to present a movement that expresses how they are feeling – this allows for the clients to consciously become aware of their feelings and notice any differences. This is also a useful tool to help us improve the workshops, as it is made clear if someone has not enjoyed something.

For main activities we may create a dance routine as a whole group or individually. It is the creative process that is most important as it can help the clients explore themselves and develop further.

Education

We use dance and movement to help clients convey their emotions. Visually creating the emotion can help make it more understandable and memorable for the clients. It allows for individuality of emotions – someones feeling of anger may be different to others and so movement allows them to make the emotions their own.

It also provides variety for the clients as they may find it difficult to describe their feelings and emotions. Dance and movement is a very enjoyable activity which will improve clients’ well-being.
